Quaker Testimonies

Quaker Testimonies

Quaker testimonies are core principles that guide the lives and actions of Quakers. They are not rules or doctrines, but rather expressions of their faith and how they strive to live it out in the world. The acronym SPICES is a helpful way to remember the main Quaker testimonies:

  • Simplicity: This testimony encourages Quakers to live lives free from unnecessary material possessions and distractions, focusing on what is truly important. It promotes plain living, avoiding extravagance, and seeking inner peace.
  • Peace: Quakers have a long-standing commitment to nonviolence and pacifism. They believe in resolving conflicts through peaceful means and actively work for peace and justice in the world.
  • Integrity: This testimony emphasizes honesty, truthfulness, and consistency in one's words and actions. Quakers strive to live with integrity in all aspects of their lives, building trust and fostering right relationships.
  • Community: Quakers value community and believe in the importance of mutual support and fellowship. They emphasize the interconnectedness of all people and the need to care for one another.
  • Equality: Quakers believe in the inherent worth and equality of all individuals, regardless of race, gender, social status, or any other distinction.  This arises from the belief that “there is that of God in each person”. They advocate for social justice and work to eliminate discrimination and oppression. Marriage of Angela & Lisa
  • Stewardship: This testimony calls on Quakers to be responsible caretakers of the earth and its resources. They promote sustainable living practices and advocate for environmental protection.

It's important to note that while SPICES is a common way to remember the testimonies, they are not a rigid set of rules. Quakers understand that the interpretation and application of these values may evolve over time and vary among individuals. The testimonies are meant to be a guide for living a faithful and meaningful life, prompting ongoing reflection and discernment.
